Psalm 129 - reproduction on art poster
In the background of the painting the contours of the land of Israel are shown.
Superimposed against these is a Menorah (candlestick) symbolising God's covenant with Israel.
The rope on the left hand side represents being bound by the darkness.
God's left hand (his 'weak' hand) is even strong enough to cut through the 'cords of the wicked'.
Written on the tip of the knife (originally real metal) are the words in Hebrew: the Lord is Just.
On the right hand side is a red cord representing God's love, with which He draws his people to Him.
This is in direct contrast to the binding rope of the enemy representing wickedness.
"They have greatly oppressed me from my youth - let Israel say - but they have not gained the victory over me.
Ploughmen have ploughed my back and made their furrows long.
But the Lord is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked."
